Cherry Newton Syrah 2016 | A Superstar Collaboration
Cherry Newton Syrah 2016 presents a dark purple-ruby center with thick crimson staining tears. The nose has a rich warm plum tone it, with spiced black cherry, Kirsch liqueur, wild violets, and black olive. There is a rich, lush texture that is voluminous and soft, yet the spices keep reappearing: clove, allspice, sweet incense, and the black cherry-vanilla cream. This vintage of Cherry Newton Syrah is round and juicy on the palate, with the lushness following through to a silky and polished finish. Amazing quality for the price of this small production Syrah. Jeff Newton hires Winemaker Cris Cherry | Meet Cherry Newton!
When we offered the ‘15 Villa Creek Cherry Newton Syrah a few months ago, it quickly became one of the most popular wines of the year. A quick sell-out, we were fielding scores of requests for more bottles with good reason—it was a dynamite red from a pair of Central Coast stars at a massive discount, making it a top buy.
When he uncovered an especially perfect plot of Syrah vines in this hidden pocket of Ballard Canyon, he decided he wanted it all to himself. He purchased the vines outright, and hired the best winemaker he knew—Cris Cherry of Villa Creek in Paso Robles—to help him make his very first wine. Cherry Newton was born.
Serendipitous cellar discovery of the year
Jeff’s 2015 Cherry Newton Syrah Rancho Boa Vista Vineyard, a sensational 93-point red that carries a $55 sticker price. But our impeccable timing and willingness to take every last bottle results in today’s deal: Just $23 per bottle.
Five years in the cellar has done wonders for this bold Syrah. It’s got sumptuous Morello cherry notes accented with hints of graphite, cigar, tar, licorice. Then add black olive tapenade and tannins that meld beautifully with the fruit and oak textures. Hence becoming wonderfully dusty on the finish. Long, lingering, and elegant, we kept coming back to our glass until the bottle that Jeff had popped for us was history.
