The hamlet of Fonterutoli, an old bastion of Florence only a few kilometers from Castellina in Chianti, is blessed with an extraordinary view of Siena, which is so close that it is possible to discern the Torre del Mangia and the outline of the Duomo.
Furthermore, the centuries-old ownership of Marchesi Mazzei has preserved the handful of houses and the church of San Miniato. In addition, the villa erected at the end of the 1500’s in place of the citadel, more or less unchanged. In conclusion, time stopped here, maintaining the charm of the Middle Ages.
About Philip Mazzei – an Italian American Patriot
So, Philip Mazzei, who enjoyed calling himself a “Citizen of the World”, befriended Franklin, Adams, Washington, and Jefferson. In addition, the latter invited him to introduce vine growing in Monticello, Virginia. As a result, in a letter to George Washington, Mazzei writes that the soil and climate of that region are wonderfully suitable for wine production.
Filippo inspired Jefferson with the idea that “All men are by nature equally free and independent. Therefore, such equality is necessary to create a free government”.
In his book A Nation of Immigrants, John F. Kennedy himself acknowledges that “The great doctrine ‘All men are created equal. Most noteworthy, incorporated in the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson, was paraphrased from the writings of Filippo Mazzei. Filippo was an Italian patriot and dear friend of Jefferson”.
